“Serenades for Bohemian wind sextet”

Sinfonie Bohemienne Orchestra : 7 musicians: 2 clarinets, 2 horns, 2 bassoons, 1 contra bassoon

THE ideal wind formation from 1750 to 1810 in the Europe of France and Vienna.
Vienna, around 1760-1780: the greatest composers delight in writing serenades for wind instruments, often played during outdoor promenades. In the context of his work on the sextet, Gilles Thomé produced a Bohemian sextet in 2006/7/8.
The purity of melodic lines and perfect harmony of the wind sextet make for an enchanting divertissement on original Bohemian instruments.

“Rameau and his time”

Sinfonie Bohemienne Orchestra: 6 musicians: 2 clarinets, 2 horns, 2 bassoons

This programme proposes arrangements for wind sextet (2 horns, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons) along with arias and dances from Acanthe et Céphise by Rameau. Pieces by Rameau were played in the 1760s: “Monsieur Gaspard joined other wind instrumentalists of the Prince de Condé in some pieces by Rameau for 2 horns, 2 clarinets and 2 bassoons at the Concert Spirituel of May 29th, 1766, the Feast of Corpus Christi. Arrangements, directed by Gilles Thomé, were made by Bertrand Peigné.
The programme also includes the very first French pieces for this formation by Gossec, followed by the popular first arrangements of opera made by the clarinettist Roeser.
In the second half, a wind band suite specially written for this formation takes us away from the fashionable opera world, a composition dedicated to this wind sextet undeniably popular until the revolution.
These works are performed, for the clarinets, on facsimiles made by Gilles Thomé based on the unique original signed by “Geist” and conserved in the Musée de la Musique in Paris. This model, from 1760, corresponds to the first clarinets introduced into France by musicians like Kaspar Prosck.

Songs of the First Republic
chief d'orchestre and clarinet: Gilles Thomé
Sinfonie Bohemienne Orchestra: 6 musicians: 2 clarinets, 2 horns, 2 bassoons and a choir of 15

With this programme, the Sinfonie Bohémienne of Gilles Thomé evokes the unknown world of the late French 18th century, the first years of the Republic. You will hear forgotten composers and extraordinary pieces. Played on original instruments and sung with all the vigour and simplicity of its creation, this music will help you to grasp an uninterrupted musical current which, having begun in opera of the Ancien Régime, grew little by little into a specific new form and culminates in the works of Beethoven and in the Ode to Joy which in some aspects it prefigures.

Une soirée chez les Jacquin – An evening at the Jacquins

“The Stadler quintet"
Soloist: Gilles Thomé, basset clarinet d’amore

Formation: 5 musicians, 2 violins, viola, cello, clarinet

This Quintet of Mozart is perfect in finishing and effect. Mozart’s nostalgia and pure intensity of melodic line is here taken to its greatest height. The clarinet, shining as never before, is treated as if Mozart had been the first to discover its charm, its volubility. Here, there is no duality between the soloist and the accompaniment, but only a fraternal rivalry.

Johann Friedrich Schink wrote about it in this way to Stadler (Litterarische Fragmente):  Please accept my thanks for your extraordinary virtuosity! What you do with your instrument, I have never heard before. I would have never thought a clarinet able to imitate the human voice like you do. Your instrument has a sonority so sweet, so tender, that no listener with a heart can resist it!”
The concert premiere of the Stadlerquintett K 581 took place on December 22, 1789 at the Tonskunstler Societät with Anton Stadler as soloist.
