Prolonging "savoir-faire…"
“I wanted to reproduce the sound, atmosphere, and music of a precise period,” explains Gilles Thomé. This desire led him to rebuild the very instruments for which works were written. His first reconstruction, thanks to generous support from the Société d’Encouragement aux Métiers d’Art (SEMA) and his collaboration with Henri Gohin, was of an 18th century clarinet calling for a savoir-faire lost to many contemporary instrument-makers. From then on, a passion for playing on instruments faithful to those composers would have known, drove him to create many different ones. Chalumeaux, ancient clarinets, basset horns followed in quick succession, designed using advanced technical research (radiography, form analysis, etc.) and with a strict respect for the methods and raw materials of the epoch. Each instrument becomes a unique, hand-made work of art, concretising in the contemporary world a craft of the past.
And the story continues, for each time La Sinfonie Bohémienne continues to make any instruments needed for works scheduled to be played.
Thanks to massive research carried out by Gilles Thomé, La Sinfonie Bohémienne now plays on magnificent instruments with warm and delicate timbres, become the trademark of this ensemble. |
